IT'S NOT
ABOUT MOPS AND BUCKETS! CLEANING IN THE NEW MILLENIUM
Olson Marble & Stone Care has a new and improved way of cleaning
and revitalizing your surfaces. Our trained technicians are using
the state of the art Turbo. "THE TURBO" is a new approach
to cleaning surfaces that are diverse and difficult, textures
born of nature thousands of years ago and tough modern laminates.
Some floors and tiles are more textured and impossible to clean
well using traditional methods. Grout is an on going challenge.
Even vinyl sheets and laminates sustain micro scratches that trap
dirt well out of reach for mops or scrubbers. Olson's can solve
and or prevent the unsightly appearance and unsanitary odor that
accompanies dirty grout, or rebuild the long lost shine to laminates.
Most hard surfaces have porosity (even granite and polished porcelain).
These micro pockets hold the biggest challenge to keeping a high
standard for indoor environments The textures in most flooring
varies but it is the absorbing surface that makes it so difficult
to restore and keep to any acceptable level. Most customers we
service appreciate the tough durable surface of tile but quickly
learn to dislike the grout. The grout being a surface quite different
than the cleanable tile is secures. Our system using the turbo
force had been designed to effectively remove all that is possible
from the surface without damaging the grout itself. Most of our
customers haven't a clue that this solution exists, they have
given up and accepted the prevailing "New Color" there
grout has taken on. Others we have seen have scrubbed large areas
getting the gross deposits off using a brush and a lot of sweat
finally giving up, sealing over the remaining dirt and grime with
some clear acrylic or other product calling it good enough. Olson's
can now deliver the best solution where others can not even come
close.
MABLE & IT'S HISTORY
Marble doesn't wear out, but like any other material it gets dirty
and has to be maintained. Marble's ageless, and can withstand
abuse as time passes, but it must be conditioned. Commercially,
marble is defined as any stone capable of taking a polish (except
for the eruptive stones such as granite). As a transformed, recrystallized
limestone, the formation of "true" marble is a result
of geological evolution. Intense heat and pressure give it the
hardness and durability for long term where. The different colors
in marble comes from water containing minerals and dissolving
vegetation which seeped through the stone and into minute fissures
and cracks when it's bed was shifted, there by producing veining
or distinctive overall coloration. That is why the Travertines,
Onyxs, Serpentines, and some of the dolomitic Limestone and non
transformed stones are identified as "Marble". Marble
comes from the earth in the form of blocks weighing 15-16 tons.
It is then cut into slabs. These slabs are placed on a polishing
table. Although many city marble shops still use hand operated
rotary polishing machines, almost every factory now has computer
controlled automatic bridge polishers, with several rotary polishing
heads. "Bricks" containing successively finer abrasives
work back and forth over the slab until a honed finish is achieved.
The final, high gloss shine is actually a chemical reaction produced
by intense heat combined with the application of tin oxide putty
or oxalic acid in the "bricks" or felt finishing discs.
Once the shop applied finish is worn off, it is rather difficult
to put it back on. But it can be done left in the hands of professional
technicians, such as the technicians at Olson Marble & Stone
Care. We specialize in maintenance and restoration of all your
stone surfaces, be sure to maintain and protect your investment.
KNOW YOUR
STONE - DEFINITIONS
MARBLE
Any stone used for decorative purposes and takes a polish. More
technically, marble is limestone that has crystallized due to
a metamorphical process over a very long period of time, ranging
from 7 to 120 million years. AGGLOMERATE (MARBLE) Marble chips
bound with resin containing marble dust generally composed of
90-95% marble and having a brecciated appearance.
GRANITE
Derived from the Italian word, Granito" meaning "grained".
It is a very hard, crystalline, igneous or transformed rock primarily
composed of dark minerals. Mineral grains are visible to the naked
eye. This material is frequently characterized as more resistant
to damage (e.g. staining, etching, etc.? Harder and more uniform
than marble, travertine, onyx, limestone or slate. Yet is still
porous and will stain. TRAVERTINE Ivory to golden brown colored
limestone formed over a period of about 600,000 years by precipitation
in hot mineral springs. It comes out of the ground "relatively"
soft compared to marble, but hardens with age and exposure. It
has sponge-like texture with up to 1/2" holes, formed from
water flowing through the stone.. These cavities are frequently
filled with a matching Portland cement.
STONES THAT DO NOT TAKE A POLISH:
SLATE
A fine-grained transformed rock derived from clays and more often
, shales. Slate has a cleavage that permits it to be readily split
into thin smooth sheets.
LIMESTONE
A sedimentary rock which, while relatively soft, weathers well.
It has a very tight-grained appearance. Limestone is more likely
to stain than marble, it is know to contain lime from sea water.
NO SANDING
HARDWOOD FLOOR & CABINET REFINISHING
DOES YOUR FLOOR NEED TO BE REFINISHED?
An easy way to tell is, if cleaning no longer restores your floor
to an acceptable appearance. Everyone loves a rich, beautiful
hardwood floor. Hardwoods truly can last forever if they are properly
maintained. When properly maintained, hardwood floors are the
easiest of all floor surfaces to keep clean and new looking. Olson
Marble and Stone Care uses a refinishing process that is completely
dust free, quick to accomplish and is a lot lest expensive than
sanding refinishing. Our trained technicians will restore your
hardwood floors to their original beauty. With our program It
is completely dust -free. You will not be cleaning up dust for
months later or having to move out of your home for a couple of
days as is the case with the sanding process. Our system is Odorless,
non toxic and dries in about an hour. You can walk on your floor
in your stockings at that time. Furniture back in about 4 hours,
and shoes and normal walking after 24 hours, at that point your
new finish is hardened and ready for normal use. The same concept
is used on cabinets. This system will not work if the floors are
damaged beyond repair. Our trained technicians will be happy to
look at your floors to give their expert opinion if this process
is right for you
HOW TO CARE FOR AND MAINTAIN YOUR STONE
It is imperative
to know the exact type of stone that is to be maintained. Stone
is Natural and may have adverse reactions to certain cleaning
products and procedures. Most stones are also natural Alkalis
and so are dirt and soil; therefore, stone and dirt are attracted
to each other which often makes cleaning very difficult. The best
prevention is regular cleaning. Dry mop floors frequently to sweep
up dirt and girt. Wash regularly with neutral soap and soft water.
Then rinse and hand buff. Wipe down walls, wash them with neutral
soap, rinse and shine them. Polished marble has a glossy surface
that reflects light and emphasizes the color and marking of the
marble. Normal maintenance involves only periodic washing with
clean water and mildly alkaline cleaners. "Soapless"
cleaners are recommended because they minimize streaking and filming.
Marble surfaces should first be wet with hot water. Then using
the cleaning solution (following manufactures instructions), wash
in small overlapping sweeps (from bottom up, if the surface is
vertical). Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of soap or cleaner
solution. Change the water in the rinse bucket frequently. Dry
with a soft cotton or flannel. Wipe off counters as frequently
as possible. Marble is an alkaline substance, and most food and
beverages contain acids, which chemically attack marble surfaces.
Tend to spills immediately, soda, juice, wine, coffee, tea, and
alcohol can quickly mark stone surfaces. The best advise is to
treat marble in the same manner you would care for fine furniture.
Marble lasts longer when properly cared for. Avoid cleaners that
contain grit or are highly alkaline in composition. Grit scratches
polished marble. Never use vinegar or harsh cleaners these will
react chemically with many stones and finishes, causing loss of
luster and etching. Never use waxes or One step acrylics, these
products result in temporary gloss, but over time, can cause serious
damage and discoloration. Avoid the use of cleaning products that
have distinctive colors. These used over a period of time tend
to impart their own character into the marble. Remember most stones
are porous and really absorb liquid and moisture. Materials like
limestone are extremely absorbent, whereas granites and serpentines
(green marbles) are denser, but will still absorb liquids that
are allowed to remain in contact with them for extended periods
of time. Even a sealed surface can be stained if spills are left
for a period of time.
The use of natural stone continues to increase in popularity,
it adds a subtle elegance and tranquility. Olson Marble &
Stone care realizes that natural stone products are being installed
