IS YOUR POOL READY FOR SUMMER FUN?

Updated: Feb 21

We pool owners are proud of our backyard oases and know we are the envy of our neighbors!

As soon as summer comes, or as us living in the San Francisco Bay Area knows, spring time, it sure seems like we get more visits from family and friends.

But with years of use and the harsh summer sun, our pool deck becomes unsightly with fading, cracking, chipping and becoming quite slick and slippery. Even the pools “coping”, the in between area that separates your pools wall and the pool deck may become worn or even chipped.

Aside from the declining aesthetics, there may be a safety and liability issue at hand.

After years of use, your pool decks texture will begin to wear out and fade becoming quite slick. This increases likelihood of injury to family and friends with even the possibility of a law suit.

Tearing out your old concrete pool deck can be an immensely expensive endeavor.

Olson Marble and Stone Care can offer you many suggestions to rejuvenate or restore your surface with an updated look with safe footing.

Three of the ways we will now discuss are;

Overlays/Resurfacing, Coatings/Stains and Repairing and Restoration of Coping

Resurfacing;

Pool Deck Overlays Are Applied Directly to Old Concrete

When you hire Olson’s to perform a pool deck overlay procedure, your technician will apply the resurfacing material directly atop your existing concrete. This type of service offers the benefit of not requiring you to tear out your old pool deck. Instead, your pool deck surface will be specially primed, and the resurfacing material will be spread or sprayed onto its surface. We will offer you an array of decorative options including stamping and design work as well as coatings and textures.

Coatings and Stains;

The first step of refinishing a worn and uneven pool deck is to sand away any damaged concrete that is on the surface.

At Olson’s Marble and Stone Care we use high-powered tools, such as shot blasters or scarifiers to completely sand down the surface of your concrete. After this procedure is finished, we will have a completely smooth surface that is ready for refinishing.

Once the sanding step has been completed, our technicians will then go to work to fix and seal any cracked areas throughout your pool deck.

Depending on your desired look and texture, there are many different types of surfaces that can be applied to your concrete. For example, you can choose color stains, composite overlays, and other materials that will provide your pool deck with a distinctive flair. At Olson’s we offer multiple staining techniques including: NEWLOOK stains, dye stains, and water based stains, acid stains, solid color stains and decorative faux staining. Our surface coatings include: epoxies, metallic epoxies, urethanes, and super tough polyaspartics. For pool decks, we always add non slip textures to our coatings for safety. Sealers available include penetrators, lacquers, and acrylics.

Not only do stains and coatings beautify your existing surfaces, they increase the lifespan of your pool deck.

Concrete resurfacing materials, decorative concrete coatings, and composite coatings are durable and stain-resistant. Concrete coatings will repel moisture and reduce your risk of unsightly cracks or chips in your concrete.

Pool Coping;

Pool coping is the material that binds the interior wall of your pool to the surrounding pool deck. Since pool coping is designed to create a seamless line between your pool walls and deck, this material is both functional and stylish. Coping can be made from poured-in-place concrete, precast concrete, tile, and all types of natural stone.

Again, years of hot sun and general use can create coping that has faded or even have scratches or chipping.

The specialists at Olson Marble and Stone Care will use finishing techniques to restore your pool coping to its original look, or transform it with a new coating including minor repairs if needed.

Fountains

Olson Marble and Stone can return the luster to your fountain due to the extreme buildup of calcium and other mineral deposits. After we restore the stone or tile to its original state, we will then seal using the best products to inhibit any future efflorescence

Whether you have recently purchased a home with an existing pool, or you would like to increase the safety and appeal of the pool in your current home, concrete coating, resurfacing and beautification will increase the lifespan and safety of your pool deck and its upscale appearance will add value to your property, not to mention bring you years of pride and enjoyment.
